Homes Around the World

This session looks how people build and live in some unusual homes around the world - from arctic to equator.

We look at the materials available and how people have adapted to cope with extreme seasons - with a comparison to our own environment.

This session is supported by photos and video clips from time spent with the Sami people in the arctic and a Maasai family in Africa and shows how people can use the most basic of natural materials like reindeer and goat skins.

There are several artefacts for children to handle from both cultures.

How can the children participate?

handle reindeer antlers
from the arctic

handle gourds and bowls
used in an African village
